Percy Hothersall was born in Prestwich in 1882, the son of Richard Hothersall, calico printer and dealer, and his wife Emma. Nothing is yet known of his education and training, the 1901 census giving him no occupation. However, by 1909 he had commenced independent practice with an office in Bury New Road, Prestwich, and two years later a second office in Mosley Street, Manchester. Although he advertised himself as architect, surveyor and estate agent, it was perhaps the last which was most significant. Early in his career Percy Hothersall became interested in the building and financing of picture houses. He frequently took his fees as architect in the form of shares in picture theatre companies, and in several cases became director. On June 30 1920 his approximate capital was estimated at £33,000, and he was at that time shareholder and director of at least nine cinema companies. However, the Piccadilly, Manchester, is his last known cinema design as increasingly he took the role of developer.

On 3 November 1926 a receiving order was made against Hattersall. His liabilities ranking for dividends were estimated at £65,125 but with the probable additional claims amounted to £69,146. The assets realised a mere £201, and no dividend was paid to unsecured creditors. According to the Official Receiver’s report, he had brought on or contributed to his bankruptcy by rash and hazardous speculations. In February 1930 he received his discharge from bankruptcy, suspended for two years. In an attempt to resurrect his architectural career following his discharge from bankruptcy Hotthersall produced designs for a proposed Hostel near Victoria Park but the scheme was not progessed.

Percy Hothersall died on 23 March 1939 at Newton Abbot, Devon, and was buried in the family grave at St Margaret's Church, Prestwich. Curiously the grave inscription gives his age as 55.
