Henry Fitzgeorge Slater was born in Manchester and was educated at Townsend School Kidderminster (1861 census). He commenced independent practice in Manchester about 1869 and was briefly in partnership with Alfred Kendal in 1878-1879. In August 1879 he declared himself bankrupt, effectively ending his architectural career in Manchester. [The London Gazette, 2 September 1879. Page 5340]

No doubt these financial difficulties led to his decision to leave the country. He emigrated to Canada in 1882 where he settled at Winnipeg, entering into partnership with W.R. Marshall (Winnipeg Times, 21 Sept. 1882, 7 advert.). In 1882 they prepared a Queen Anne style design for the residence of Alexander Bain, River Avenue, Winnipeg, Man. (City of Winnipeg, 1987 The Year Past, 59 60, illus.). In 1883 Slater was noted as the architect (likely with Marshall) of the Manitoba House Building & Portland Stone Manufacturing Company, Gladstone Street near Point Douglas Avenue, Winnipeg, Man. (Manitoba Daily Free Press [Winnipeg], 8 March 1883, description). By May 1883 Slater had formed a new partnership with Neil D. Barker, and with him submitted an entry in the competition for the Winnipeg City Hall (G. Brooks, Plain Facts about the New City Hall, 1884, 10, list of competitors). Their entry was not premiated and Barber, Bowes & Barber were declared winners.

Slater returned to England, probably in 1883 but certainly by 1888. His wife Emmie, died in Manchester in April of that year and by 1891 he was living in Blackpool, employed as a draughtsman.

Henry Fitzgeorge Slater died on 19 April 1893 at the Chorlton Union Infirmary. Manchester.
