The son of Richard Banks, joiner and builder and Hannah, Alexander Banks was born at Broughton, Salford, in 1848 and had moved to Oldham by 1870. In that year he married Elizabeth Dyson, aged 18 and a cotton operative at St Matthew’s Church, Chadderton. His occupation was given as joiner on the marriage certificate. By 1881 he was described as the architect for an Infants’ School, at Coldhurst, Oldham, his first known commission.

Alexander Banks died on 18 January 1894 and was buried on 22 January 1894 at Chadderton Cemetery.
