Henry Lord

Henry Lord was born on 21 May 1843 at Chester, the son of Henry Hardman Lord, engineer and was educated at Manchester Grammar School and Making Place Hall at Ripponden near Halifax. He was articled to Charles Reboul Sacre (1831-1889) at Manchester Railway Works Gorton as an engineer for one year but illness forced him to give up the profession. Shortly afterwards he was articled to Ernest Bates, architect of Manchester, 1860-1864 and remained as chief clerk until 1867. He then entered the Architects Department of the London and North Western Railway until 1871, at which time he commenced independent practice in Manchester. Member of the MSA 1877 and was elected Fellow of the RIBA on 17 December 1888 proposed by J. Holden, J. Murgatroyd and G T Redmayne.
A staunch Conservative, he was a member of the Manchester Conservative Club, St Ann’s Street and Vice Chairman of South Salford Conservative Association. A Justice of the Peace for the County Borough of Salford, he was appointed to the bench in November 1885 and at the time of his death he was the longest serving magistrate. On Tuesday 25th August 1874 he married Sarah Ellen, the eldest daughter of the Rev J M Calvert, of Gargrave, at the Parish Church, Clapham, Yorkshire. They had four sons and four daughters.
Henry Lord died at about 11pm 2 June 1926 at Salford Royal Hospital as a result of injuries received when he was knocked down by a motor car close to his home in Bolton Road, Pendleton. The inquest was reported in the Salford City Reporter the following week. One of his sons, Henry Hardman Lord of Gilda Brook Road, Eccles, described his father as generally healthy but deaf and short sighted. Verdict “Accidental death”
