About 1885 he entered into partnership with A R Gradwell under the style of Stones and Gradwell, architects and surveyors of Blackburn and Darwen, this partnership being dissolved on 3 July 1899.  The two partners also formed a separate partnership with James’s brother, William Grimshaw Stones, carrying on business as Civil and Mechanical Engineers and Mill Architects. Again, this partnership was dissolved as far as Gradwell was concerned, on 3 July 1899. Stones and Stones was dissolved by mutual consent on 16th July 1906.
