This memorial was erected in 1926 to commemorate the local people who died in the First World War. The names of those who died in the Second World War and later are also displayed on the memorial. It takes the form of a clock tower, made of granite from Anglesey, and was unveiled in 1926. It was designed by Segar Owen and built by J M Jones of Amlwch on land donated by the Vaynol Estate and London, Midland & Scottish Railway. In the same year the village’s memorial hall was opened, on a side road a short distance to the south west.

In the 1920s the town was still commonly known as Port Dinorwic. Here slates from the Dinorwig quarry near Llanberis were transferred from railway wagons to ships at the slate dock on the Menai Strait. Most of the local men who died in the Second World War were seamen.
