Foundation stone laid on 29 September 1841 on land donated by Sir Oswald Mosley, the lower part of which was known as Leadenhall Market. Cost £1400 of which the government gave £418 and the National Society £250, the remainder being raised by public subscription. (Axon Annals of Manchester)
