The son of Robert Goldsmith and his wife Esther, Robert Goldsmith (II) was born in Manchester in 1793. He married Mary or Mary Ann Hartley by whom he had at least seven children. She died on 29 December 1864 aged 68 years and was burials at All Saints Chorlton-on-Medlock.  However, the 1861 census shows Robert Goldsmith, architect, married to Harriett. About the time of his marriage, he commenced architectural practice at Bond Street, now Princess Street, Manchester. Little is yet known of his architectural output before the 1840s, although his name appears in excess of 60 advertisements in the local press in connection with the sale of land and property. By 1847 he was in partnership with his elder son George Hartley Goldsmith (1821-1887) under the style of Robert Goldsmith and Son, a partnership which continued until his death in 1866.

Robert Goldsmith (II) died on 3 February 1866 at his residence and was buried in the family grave at All Saints Church, Chorlton-on-Medlock.
