New build

A bungalow type house on the crest of the hill, over 500 feet above sea level, for Thomas Matthews, Esq, head of the well-know firm of well-borers, Thomas Matthews & Sons. There being no public water supply at this high point Mr. Matthews has put his principles into practice by sinking a shaft about 80 feet deep, and has obtained an excellent supply of water. This is easily raised by a specially designed hand-pump and forced into a cistern fixed in the roof, from which the supply of water is distributed in the usual way for domestic purposes. A site which many people would hesitate to utilise for building purposes has thus become available for villa residences.
