On the east side of the A6 and close to the Boar's Head Public House is St Lawrence's Church, which was completed in 1895. It is constructed of yellow sandstone with red sandstone dressings and slate roof with red ridge tiles. The west window has geometrical leaded clear glazing with three stained glass insets; a coat of arms and 2 shields with boars’ heads said to be associated with Barton Old Hall.  Viscount Cross laid the foundation stone of this church on 22 April 1895 and the building was consecrated for divine worship on 29 July 1896. Miss Mary Cross gave a donation of £2,000 towards the new church, and Mr C R Jackson left a legacy of £2,500 on behalf of it. The old church was situated just in front of where the "new" church stands. It was a very plain, externally whitewashed building, erected in 1845.
