PENDLETON - The chief stone of the new Schools in connection with Brunswick Wesleyan Chapel, Pendleton, has been laid. They are to be erected in Gardener Street, near to the Mechanics Institute, from plans drawn up by Messrs Hayley & Sons (sic), Manchester, architects. The building will be only one story high, in the Gothic style, and of red brick, the ornamental work and tracings to the windows being of stone. There will be accommodation in the schools, according to the Manchester Courier, for 650 Sunday and 420 day scholars. The school will include a mixed or juvenile school, with four classrooms, lavatories and lobbies. A master’s house, costing about £380 is also included in the estimates. The estimated outlay will be about £3200 which includes £700, the cost of the land and law charges. [Builder 6 April 1861 Page 236]

BRUNSWICK WESLEYAN SCHOOLS, PENDLETON - Yesterday the foundation stone of the intended Day and Sunday Schools in connection with the Brunswick Wesleyan Chapel, Pendleton, was laid by Mr Sam Turnbull of Ardwick, in the presence of a large concourse of people. The site of the projected schools is in Gardner Street, in a continuous line with the Mechanics institution, and at the rear of the Wesleyan Chapel. The building is in the Gothic style, and will be constructed of red brick, with stone introduced by way of ornament and tracery to the windows. The whole will be on one floor and the roof will be an open timbered one. There is to be accommodation for 650 children in the Sunday Schools and 420 children in the day school. They will include a mixed school and an infant school with two convenient classrooms to each school with lavatories, playgrounds, etc. A residence for the master will also be attached. The entire cost is estimated at £3,200. Of this sum £800 has been given as a Government grant, and the rest to within £600 has already been raised by subscription. The architects are Messrs Hayley and Sons of Cross Street. [Manchester Guardian 30 March 1861 page 4]

The bulding was later acquired by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company and demolished. A replacement school by R Knill Freeman was subsequently erected on Broad Street, Pendleton
