New build

A large country house situated approximately half way between Windermere and Ambleside, with grounds running down to the lake shore. It was built originally for the Manchester industrialist, W. Henry Gaddum, cotton and silk merchant, who was related to the Potters and who wished to have a ‘summer house’ in the newly fashionable Lake District. White roughcast render over rubble walling. Verandahs at ground and first floors. Three shaped gables. Untypical symmetrical elevation. Interior much altered. It became a convalescent home for the women of Liverpool before being purchased by the National Parks in 1969 as offices and an information centre. Landscaping by Thomas Mawson.
