Thomas Bickerstaff Harper "Tom" Ellis was born at Lancaster and trained at Lancaster Technical School, Lancaster School of Art, Royal College of Art and Architectural Association. In 1927 junior assistant to Thomas H Mawson & Son.  1938 took final RIBA examination and was a Victory Scholarship finalist. 1939 became assistant to Vincent Harris and studio instructor at Regent Street Polytechnic. In 1939-45 War he enlisted in Royal Engineers, becoming Chief Designs Officer. From 1947 partner in Lyons & Israel, later Lyons, Israel, Ellis & Gray. Two designs, for a house for a surrealist and for a memorial clocktower, illustrated in Gallery Lingard catalogue, Prize Papers, 1988. [Frank Kelsall]
