The son of Thomas Smith (publican) and his wife Mary. John Thorley Smith was born in Eccles in 1872. He was in  partnership with Bernard William Hurt Brameld supposedly from 1895 although the 1901 census lists him as an architect’s clerk. Following Brameld’s suicide in 1914 he continued the practice alone until his own death in 1924. The practice was then acquired bt Fred Riley.

John Thorley Smith died on the morning of Sunday 12 October 1924, in a motor accident on the Chester to Whitchurch road between Malpas and Cholmondeley together with John Hamilton Walker, contractor of Pendleton and Walter Downs of Beswick the chauffeur. A fourth occupant, Frank Joule, butcher of Pendleton, survived.  Evidence at the inquest indicated that the car had apparently skidded, left the road and run across the grass before running down the bank into a stream and turning over. John Thorley Smith died of a fractured skull and other head injuries. A verdict of accidental death was recorded. His interment took place at St Catherine’s Church, Barton on Irwell on Thursday October 16 1924.
