John Artingstall, the son of George Artingstall, timber merchant, and Sarah Artingstall, was born at Worsley, and christened 9 February 1812 at St Mary the Virgin, Eccles.  Little is known of his professional career.  He commenced independent practice before 1847 in which year he is recorded as having an office in Victoria Buildings. About 1860 he moved to Ashton-under-Lyne but maintained a Manchester office until his death.

John Artingstall died on 21 January 1866 at his residence, 30 Hewitt Street Cheetham.

Although his residence is not listed in the Directories of 1876 and 1877-8, Alfred Armstrong is assumed to have been living at 61 Chorlton Road, where his sister ran a Ladies School.
