The general purposes committee recommended the resignation be accepted, and it was agreed to by a special meeting of Salford Council. [Manchester Guardian 2 September 1854 page 9]. Almost immediately he was re-employed under the title of District Surveyor for Salford. He retired in 1869, to become landlord of the White Hart Hotel, Cheadle.

James Evans died at Cheadle on 26 August 1869, aged 65 years. His funeral was reported in the Manchester Courier as follows:

FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH - A trait illustrative of devoted attachment to the very last occurred yesterday forenoon at the funeral of Mr James Evans, White Hart Hotel, Cheadle, better known as formerly borough surveyor for Salford. The bier was carried from the house to the church almost adjoining and conspicuous amongst the mourners following was observed a fine old Newfoundland dog, which walked as it were side by side, passing through the open church doors, remaining quiet during the recital of the burial service, afterwards accompanying the reformed procession to the grave side until all was over, and returning with the mourners to the house. The dog has been seen visiting the grave since. [Manchester Courier 1 September 1869 page 5]
