Francis Eldred Lodge Harris was born in the St Pauls district of Bristol the son of James Harris, master carpenter and his wife Sarah Ann. Originally employed as a builder’s clerk, F E L Harris commenced independent practice in Chelmsford, Essex in 1889, and moved to Manchester in 1897 as chief architect to the Co-operative Wholesale Society Limited.
