Born at Blackburn on 9 January 1881, Arthur Rowland Gradwell was the elder son of Arthur Richard Gradwell (qv) and Mary Ann Gradwell, his wife. He was articled to his father, and passed the intermediate exam of the RIBA in1900. He continued his father’s practice under the style “A R Gradwell and Son,” about 1910.

In 1913 he married Annie Mercer Whipp, the elder daughter of the Mayor and Mayoress of Clitheroe (Mercer Whipp).

A P Gradwell was taken seriously ill on Thursday 15 June 1944 and died in the early hours of Friday morning (within hours of his eldest son, killed in action in Burma)
