The line was owned jointly by the London and North Western Railway and the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway from the start of operations in 1849. This was one of the first truly suburban railways and was instrumental in the development of its suburban hinterland

Francis Stevenson and Alexander Ross acted as joint engineers for the two companies in the 1890s, including the rebuilding of Knott Mill Station
