The imposing war memorial to the men of Wigan, numbering nearly 1,800, who gave their lives in the Great War was this afternoon unveiled by General H A Lawrence and dedicated by Dr David, Bishop of Liverpool. The memorial, which has been designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, is on the lines of the old Eleanor crosses, 44 feet high with a spreading base of 22 feet. At the top of the memorial are eight angels bearing wreaths. The whole of the memorial is carried out in Clipham stone, with the exception of the 40 panels at the base on which the names of the men commemorated are inscribed, the panels being of Hopton Wood marble.
