NEW WESLEYAN CHURCH AT CHEETHAM HILL - The memorial stones of a new Wesleyan church which is being built in the Wilton Polygon, facing Bury Old Road, Cheetham Hill, were laid on Saturday afternoon. The church will supersede the old Cheetham Hill Wesleyan church, which has become inadequate and incommodious. The new building - of which Messrs William Waddington and Son of St Ann’s Square, are the architects - is designed in the style of English Gothic which prevailed at the end of the 14th century. It will group well from the angle of the Polygon, at which point a spire rising to 150 feet will centre the composition. The main gable will be flaked by octagonal buttresses terminating in pinnacles, and the porch will also be in projection. The church is being built in stone, and will consist of a broad nave with lateral arcades, and there will be transepts to the north and south and a spacious chancel. Within the building will be included a minister’s vestry, a choir vestry, two classrooms, a large lecture hall and a church parlour. The church will seat about 900 people, and the total cost is estimated at ,11,000. Towards this amount some ,7,000 had been subscribed at the time of the stone-laying. Messrs R Neill and Sons are the contractors. [Manchester Guardian 17 September 1894 page 6]

NEW WESLEYAN CHURCH CHEETHAM HILL – The new Wesleyan Church at Cheetham Hill, which has bee erected at a cost of nearly £12,000, was opened yesterday. It stands on the edge of Bury Old Road near the entrance to the Polygon and forms a distinct addition to the architectural beauties of the neighbourhood. Its style of architecture may be described as 15th century English Gothic. The building is grouped from the standpoint of the Polygon entrance. On the centre part is a tower and spire flanked with a pinnacle gable on the left and an octagonal staircase on the right, and a projecting narthex. The building is formed of stone and the interior woodwork is of pitch pine. Lead lights in colour constitute the windows.
