Wedgwood Memorial Institute (Architectural Competition)
WEDGWOOD MEMORIAL INSTITUTE.—At a special meeting of the Wedgwood Institute Committee, held on Thursday week, the envelopes containing the names of the successful competitors for the decoration prizes were unsealed, and it was then found that the prizes had been appropriated as follows:–1st, to Mr. Robert Edgar, architect, of London (formerly of Stoke), and Mr. John Kipling, modeller in pottery, conjointly; 2nd, to Mr. De Ville, London; 3rd, to Mr. John Ladds, London; 4th, to Mr. Edward Power, London. The authors of the designs which received honourable mention in the report were —Mr. Rogers, “Hartsease;” Mr. James Lessels, “In Hope I byde; ” Mr. Harry Green, “Monitor.” The committee very warmly approved of the report, and cordially concurred in recognizing the merit of the designs premiated. The first prize of £25 was presented by Mr. Beresford Hope; the second, £15, by Mr. Heathcote; the third, £10, by Mr. Edge; and the 4th, £5, by the Rev. Dr. Armstrong. THE WEDGWOOD MEMORIAL INSTITUTE AND “CERAMIC ARCHITECTURE” - The third premium was awarded to Mr. John Ladds for a design (71), in which some of the more prominent features are pictorial subjects connected with the potter’s art, represented by black outline, in the lower part of a tympanium to each pointed arch of the ground-storey windows. The doorway is round-arched, of Early English character, with shafts of parti-coloured voussoirs. In the upper story are small pointed arched windows, and panels and medallions with portrait-heads in colour. [Builder 11 June 1864 page 427]
