United Methodist Free Chapel, Mankinholes Bank, Lumbutts, West Yorkshire

LUMBUTTS - On Saturday the corner stone of a new chapel and school, belonging to the United Methodist Free Church, were laid at Lumbutts, near Todmorden. The style will be Gothic, from designs by J. Horsfall, architect, Todmorden. The cost will be about £1,200. [Building News 14 September 1877 page 272]

LAYING THE CORNER STONE OF LUMBUTTS NEW CHAPEL – Four of the chief corner stones of the place of worship now in course of re-erection at Lumbutts were laid on Saturday afternoon last. …. The new chapel will stand on the site of the building which it supplants. the foundations of the old building on three sides having been made use of for the new building. On the fourth side (the back) the wall will be set four or five yards further back, and by so much the area of the new building will be larger than the area of the old one. The original chapel was built about the year 1837, was of one storey only, and had not only become greatly inconvenient, but needed extensive repairs; the proposed new premises will contain two storeys. the lower of which will be fitted up as a school. and the upper as a chapel, to which there will be vestries and a small gallery. The stone of the old building is being used for the sides and rear of the new one; the front will be of Yorkshire stone, pitch-faced, relieved by a large lancet-headed window with tracery. The estimated cost of the building is £1200 - the contracts amount to £1006. and that does not include school furniture and other small expenses. There are at prevent in connection with the church 46 members. besides a considerable number of attendants not joined to the church; the school roll contains 33 teachers and 107 scholars. The new chapel will comfortably seat from 230 to 250 people. and the school will accommodate about 200. The architect is Mr. Jesse Horsfall, of York-place, Todmorden; the contractors for the works already let are Messrs Ashworth and Saville, masons; Messrs. Halstead Brothers, joiners; Messrs.
