Built in 1841 to carry the Manchester and Birmingham railway across the valley of the River Dene on 23 semi-circular arches. As with the other viaducts on this line it is built principally of red brick with sandstone used sparingly for string courses. and takes the line up to 34m above the river Dene.  The viaduct now carries the electrified main line railway from Manchester to Crewe. During the building of the railway, the population of Holmes Chapel rose from 406 in 1831 to 1,008 in 1841. In 1851, it dropped to 555. There were 130 men and their families housed mainly in a shanty town in the valley.
