BOLTON - The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company have determined upon making some alterations in the passenger station at Trinity‑street, plans of which have been prepared by Messrs Barker and Ellis, architects, of Manchester. A new building, 280ft. long, is to be erected on the Bradshaw‑gate side of the Blackburn line, one end of which will have a frontage to Trinity‑street.  [Building News 14 May 1869 page 442]

THE LANCASHIRE AND YORKSHIRE NEW STATION AT BOLTON. An inspection of the plans for the proposed new station, made yesterday the offices of Mr. Taylor, surveyor, of Brazennose-street, Manchester, enables us to state that the works will on very extensive scale, and that the arrangements generally are most complete. The new station will be erected on the side of Trinity-street bridge nearest Bradshawgate, and will face the Blackburn-line. The building is crescent-shaped, and follows the curvature the rails; and the main elevation is of classic design, plain, but very neat. It is 280 feet in length, one portion is two storeys high, and the end of this a clock tower rises to the height of 53 feet, and is surmounted by a flag-staff; the remaining length of the front being one storey. The windows—of which there are 59, each 8 feet 6 inches long by 3 feet wide —are treated with moulded bricks, and the cornices are also broken up with moulded brickwork, giving to the whole a very good effect. The ground plan embraces spacious waiting-rooms of various classes; fine first and second class refreshment-rooms; the booking offices, telegraphic departments, inspectors' rooms, etc., all large and good, and supplied with ample approaches and exits. There is also a large amount closet accommodation, the fittings of which are to be of a superior character. On the first floor, to be approached from Trinity-street, is a dining-hall or public restaurant, 60 feet long by 34 feet wide, with smoking-room, lavatories, and other requisite offices attached; also a large kitchen, with fire-proof floor; various serving rooms; four bedrooms, with sitting-room attached, and other arrangements for the accommodation of passengers who may find it desirable to avail themselves of it. The building will also be amply provided with cellarage underneath, for the reception of stores; and the platform —that all-important item in railway arrangement —will be 30 feet wide and from 300 to 400 feet in length. As a whole, the new station will be of very superior order; neatness and completeness having been secured without extravagance of outlay; while the front will have imposing effect, heightened the crescent shape of the design. The architects are Messrs Barker and Ellis, of Cooper-street, Manchester; the contracts are expected to be let next Tuesday week and the works, it is understood, are be put in progress without delay. It is be hoped, now that the long-desired improvement is to effected, that the street approaches may be arranged to render the station easy of access from ail points.
