"The Common" Windermere
This delightfully planned house is now being erected by local men from stone obtained on the estate, rough cast on the outside, the dressings to the doors and windows being of stone from a quarry near Carnforth and the roof will be covered with green Westmorland slates. The whole of the interior woodwork will be stained and varnished and the house stands on a steep slope and will command fine views, the continuous verandah affording a charming outlook in every direction. We do not remember to have seen a better planned house of this kind anywhere and few indeed so good in nearly every particular. [British Architect 10 February 1899].
The Common Windermere LA 23 1JH now divided into flats. Not shown on the 1899 OS map but appears on the 1920 OS map, approximately three quarters of a mile north east of Windermere centre approached by a lane running north from the A591, with a lodge at the entrance. Cumbria Archive contains details of the sale of the estate in 1898. To the north of the house a quarry is indicated on the 1920 map.
