NEW CONSERVATIVE CLUB IN CHEETHAM – On Saturday afternoon the memorial stones of a new Conservative Club which is being erected in Cheetham were laid by Sir William Houldsworth M P and Viscount Emlyn. The site chosen for the Club is at the corner of North Street, opposite Elizabeth Street, on the Cheetham Hill Road. It is the place on which Stocks House, the residence of the late Mr James Crossley well-known as the President of the Chetham Society used to stand. The new buildings will be in the Elizabethan style, in accordance with the designs of Mr W Ball (Messrs Ball and Elce, architects). Messrs Wilson and Toft are the builders. The total cost will be about £3,200. [Manchester Guardian 27 July 1892 page 4]

Although not mentioned in the proceedings, Henry Boddington II had represented Cheetham Ward for the Conservatives in the 1880s.

THE CHEETHAM (MANCHESTER) CONSERVATIVE CLUB - We publish view, plans and sections of the new Conservative Club at Cheetham, Manchester, from the architects’ preliminary design. The building promises to be a picturesque group with a quaint and comfortable interior, following old English character of design with every modern convenience and comfort. All the external walls are to be faced with red Ruabon bricks, and the exterior masonry will be in red stone from the Cumberland quarries. The apartments will be fitted with dark stained oak woodwork and fibrous plaster work. The design is to be carried out with some modification of the plans we illustrate. The architects are Messrs. Ball & Elce, of 3, Mount Street, Manchester. [British Architect 10 April 1891 page 276]
