A TEMPERANCE BILLIARD HALL - Manchester is about to be placed. in possession of its first Temperance Billiard Hall. Liverpool has already several of these establishments, and their success during the past few years proves that, given the opportunity, the young men of that City can enjoy their evening games without the stimulus of intoxicating liquor. What can be done in Liverpool can of course, also be done in Manchester. The idea of the promoters of the movement is to supplement other forms of temperance activity by the provision of attractive places of amusement and recreation after the work of the day is over. "No gambling, no intoxicants, no credit" is the rule in the temperance billiard halls. At the same time, nobody is expected to play billiards or to order refreshment as the penalty of visiting one of them: they are open to all without restriction, and public inspection welcomed. The new hall in Manchester, which will be opened to-morrow, is in Moss Lane East, at the corner of Westwood Street. It is a building of modern appearance, with a. frontage that is rendered attractive by means of artistic tiles and bow windows of leaded glass. Within. the arched roof gives an impression of great spaciousness, and the decorations are bright' and cheerful. There are seventeen billiard tables. The hall is not altogether a philanthropic institution. It is expected to make a fair return-to the Company by whom it has been provided. Halls of a similar character will probably be built in other districts of the city. [Manchester Guardian 6 May 1904 page 12].
