Yesterday afternoon Mr E Hardcastle MP laid the foundation stone of new Sunday schools about to be erected in connection with St Mary’s Church, Droylsden. Up to the present time there have been no Church of England schools at Droylsden, and the buildings which are now projected will supply a deficiency which has long been felt by the Rector of the parish and his congregation. The schools will be excellently situated adjacent to the church, and have been designed so as to harmonise with that structure. They will be built of brick, sparsely dressed with stone, and will be in the early English style of architecture. A boys’ school, 63 feet 6 inches by 30 feet, and a girls’ school, 62 feet by 30 feet, so arranged to form one long room when necessary, are the main features of the plan, but there are also to be several classrooms of large dimensions. The schools are estimated to cost £3,000, exclusive of fences, offices and furniture; and when complete will afford accommodation for between 600 and 700 children. Messrs John Eaton and Son of Ashton-under-Lyne are the architects; and Messrs Bates and Company of Droylsden, the builders. [Manchester Guardian 7 April 1874 page 6]
