STABLES FOR THE CARRIAGE COMPANY - A large block of stables for the Manchester Carriage Company is in course of erection in Chorlton-road, and another building of a similar character for the same Company, is about being finished in Rusholme. The former is rectangular in shape, one wing having an elevation on the Whalley Range side of Chorlton-road, and the other wing fronting Old Trafford. Some idea may be formed of their size when we say they cover about two acres of land, and will accommodate nearly 400 horses, besides containing engine house (the hay being chopped by steam), hay loft, shoeing forge, harness room, covered shed 180 feet long by 80 feet wide for omnibuses, manager’s house and other conveniences. The building is mainly composed of stock brick, faced with stone and blue brick, and has no pretensions to architectural show, although its appearance will be somewhat dignified by a noble-looking entrance forming a segmental arch with Tuscan caps, surmounted by a parapet. The only other feature by way of ornament will be a handsome clock turret on the roof of the machine room. The architect is Mr W Murray Smith, of John Dalton-street, and the builder Mr John Wilson of Erskine-street, Hulme, to whom the contract was let in July last year for the sum of ,6,758, but this does not include the cost of paving, the supply of internal fittings, steam engine, or machinery. The work was commenced about August last, and should be completed by March next. [The Manchester City News Saturday 20 January 1872. Page 3]
