The new church of St Stephen, which has been erected at Flowery Field to supersede an iron mission room, was consecrated on Saturday afternoon by the Bishop of Chester. The church, situate in a good position near to Hyde Junction Station, and built at a cost of about £7,000 is in the 13th century style of architecture. The plan is arranged so that the congregation is seated in the nave, the side aisles being used only as passages to the seats. The roof is open-timbered in Baltic and deal, the benches in pitch pine, and the whole of the floors, except in the chancel, are wood block. Externally the church is of Halifax parpoints, with Matlock stone dressings. The whole work has been carried out by Messrs Storrs Son and Company Limited, Stalybridge, the architects being Messrs Eaton and Sons, Ashton-under-Lyne. [Manchester Guardian 13 April 1891 page 6].
