St Paul’s Church Oldham Road, New Cross, Manchester (Architectural Competition)
DESIGN FOR PROPOSED NEW CHURCH OF ST. PAUL, MANCHESTER - Our double-page plate this week illustrates a design by Asahel P. Bell, architect, Royal Exchange, Manchester, submitted to the Committee of St. Paul’s Church, about to be erected from the designs of John O. Scott, Esq., of London. The church is to take the place of an old one, the site of which is required for the extension of a city warehouse. The site purchased was the only one that could be obtained. The old structure provided accommodation for 1,000 persons; it was therefore necessary to seat an equal number in the new building; the restricted area of the site rendered it impossible to do this without galleries, and its form naturally pointed to the east end as making the best arrangement. The stipulated cost was £10,000. [Building News 9 July 1875 page 36]
