St Matthew’s Church Grenville Street Edgeley Stockport: Reredos
A REREDOS FOR A STOCKPORT CHURCH - The carved oak reredos of triptych construction which is now exhibited at the Manchester School of Art has been designed by Messrs Oakley and Sanville for St Matthew’s Stockport, and has been carved by Mr James Lenegan. All the carving is fine handiwork in oak from Shropshire. The reredos will be painted in satin-black, gold and green, picked out with red. The central panels will be painted with a diaper of green and gold; the other six panels are to be occupied by representations of the four Evangelists, St Chad and St Werburgh, which are being painted by Mrs Sims Williams, who for a time studied at the Stockport School of Art. The architects have designed an oak panelling to go behind the reredos; this will be partly coloured. The church is somewhat dark and the design of the work is intended to focus attention on the triptych. [Manchester Guardian 23 May 1935 page 4]
