New “Salvation Army Barracks” were opened last Monday at Tunbridge Wells. Seating accommodation is provided for 900 persons. The total cost, including £200 for extra foundations which had to be put in, owing to the nature of the ground, to a depth of 23 feet, was £1,500. The site, costing £300, was given to the “Army” by the Misses Wells, of Tunbridge Wells. The front elevation, we are informed, “is designed in the Jacobean style, with a modern feeling.” Mr. F. J. Coxhead, of Leytonstone, Essex, was the builder, and the architect was Mr. E. J. Sherwood, of 101, Queen Victoria-street. [Builder 18 December 1886 page 874]
