In the 1820's Salford was also beginning to erect public buildings in the Greek Revival style along Chapel Street, including the Church of St. Philip by Smirke and the new town hall. in Bexley Square The foundation stone for the Town Hall was laid on 30 August 1825 by Lord Bexley, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Paid for by public subscription. In 1834 it was acquired by the Police Commissioners for £5,000. In 1888 on the borough becoming incorporated, it was taken over and enlarged to provide the necessary accommodation for the municipal administration. More than £100,000 was spent on repeated additions to the building. (Hampson Pg. 279). Garlands instead of triglyphs decorate the frieze.
