Saint Christopher Private School, Letchworth
In 1919 the St Christopher’s School Trust sought a site to build a larger day school premises. At this time there were no houses at top of Spring Road and St Francis College, designed by Morley Horder, was built between 1919 and 1924. The building form follows the acute angle of the plot. It consists of a single storey loggia facing south towards the roundabout together with its two single storey wings following the lines of Spring Road and Broadway. The higher buildings, which join the two wings, completing the central paved courtyard, were erected later. The building has a distinct Mediterranean character with white rendered walls and pantile roofs. The large-scale additions were made in the 1930’s including the large block facing onto Broadway, although at a varying angle, designed in a in a loosely classical style.
