This hall is the oldest inhabited country house in Cheshire, with parts of it dating from the 14th century. It was originally owned by the Chorley family, from whom it passed first to a branch of the Davenports and then c1600 to the Stanleys of Alderley. Additions were made in the 16th and 19th centuries, and in 1915 Phipps undertook a full restoration.
