Construction of the church began on the site in 1893 in three stages. First, the nave including the north and south aisles dedicated in October 1895. Secondly, the Lady Chapel, chancel and organ and vestry areas dedicated in 1899. Thirdly, the tower, including the baptistry, in 1911. The architect was Hodgson Fowler of Durham.
The oak reredos and panels, chancel screen and associated figures date from 1924, 1931 and 1939 respectively, by Boulton & Co of Cheltenham, to designs by J. Harold Gibbons F.R.I.B.A.
