EDGELEY, NEAR STOCKPORT - New schools for girls and infants are being built at the Roman Catholic church here. The foundation stone was laid on Easter Monday, by Mr E. W. Watkin, MP, with the usual formalities. The estimated cost, including fittings, will be £1,500. The architects are Messrs. M. E. Hadfield & Son, of Sheffield; and the builder is Mr. J. Paul, of Knutsford. The exterior is of brick, with stone facings, and some slight admixture of tiles, strings. The entrance and staircase are at one end of the building through a dome gabled, and surmounted by a cross. There are spacious play-grounds, and the site is cheerful and open. The schools are in all respects planned to suit the requirements of the Privy Council aided by a building grant. The schools will accommodate 500 children, and it is expected they will be completed by the end of September. [Builder 2 May 1868 page 326].
