Proposed New Council Offices, Pensby Road, Heswall, Wirral
At a meeting in a room over a stable, with sounds of horse-kicking, Wirral U.D.C. at Heswall last night decided upon new offices, at a cost of £8,000. The design follows the award of Mr Gilbert Fraser in the architectural competition and is the work of Gray Evans and Crossley, Liverpool. The site will be in Pensby Road.
NEW COUNCIL OFFICES AT HESWALL - The new Wirral Urban District offices are to be erected on the site of the car park in Pensby-road, Heswall, and it is anticipated that they will be ready in eight months. The council decided at its meeting at Heswall last night, to accept the design submitted by Messrs. Gray Evans and Crossley of Liverpool, for the new offices. The designs sent in in the architectural competition were judged by Gilbert Fraser and the Council accepted his award. The new offices are estimated to cost £8,000 and will be approached by a flight of steps from the car park. On the ground floor will be the clerks and surveyors department and the council meeting room will be on the first floor. Externally building will be faced with sand faced bricks with Portland stone dressings and the roof will be covered with green coloured slates. The scheme proved highly controversial. The council eventually decided to abandon the new-build proposal instead purchasing Hill House; Heswall, for conversion into offices. These finally opened in December 1937.
