At the outbreak of the Second World War, Elder was working on a revolutionary project for a vast 2000 seat egg-shaped cinema to be built in Manchester. It was to have been constructed in reinforced concrete with the screen in the pointed end of the egg, which would have had to be supported on stilts. The war killed the scheme.
