The installation of a Poor Clare’s Convent, which has just been erected at Richmond Grove, Longsight, Lancashire, took place yesterday, the ceremony being performed by Bishop Turner, of the Roman Catholic diocese of Salford. The building is of the French Gothic style, and has been erected by Mr Joseph Thompson, of Hulme, from the plans of Mr W Nicholson, architect, of this city. Internally, it is in the form of a square, cloisters extending along each side, and apartmentsCor cells, as they are calledChave been erected for the reception of twenty‑four nuns and nine lay sisters. At one end of the building a schoolroom has been erected, capable of receiving 150 children; whilst at the other end stands the chapel - a large open room which will accommodate between 250 and 300 persons. Between 11am and 7pm on 14 April 1868, the convent was open for public inspection - admission 1s and 6d as advertised in the Manchester Guardian. The opening provoked some anti-Catholic feeling. [MG 24 April 1868 page 3]
