Plas Dinas, Dinas Mawddwy, Merionethshire
Plas Dinas was a substantial country house built on the site of an old mansion formerly the residence of John Mytton of Halston, Shropshire standing in about 100 acres of pleasure grounds and parkland. On the terraces to the north and east of the house were seven elaborately planted geometric beds. To the east the land sloped away to the lawn and the river, with parkland beyond. Exotic conifers, especially Wellingtonia were a feature of the estate. To the west was a quadrangular walled garden geometrically planted with a fountain at its centre and glasshouses against the walls on three sides. The walls were of mass concrete construction, incorporating heating flues, thereby providing a suitable climate for exotic fruit flowers and vegetables in the greenhouses.
On 6 April 1864 William Rees, Edmund Buckley’s father-in-law, laid the foundation stone of new Plas Dinas. The house must have been substantially complete when Edmund Buckley and William Rees met Mr Stephens (sic) on site to inspect progress on 29 November 1866. The family were certainly in occupation by May 1867.
Destroyed by fire January 1917. Burnt out shell finally cleared in the 1960's.
