Built during the heyday of the Pendleton Co-op who owned a number of buildings in the immediate vicinity. Built of Ruabon brick and terra cotta with dressings of Burntwood stone, the four storey building cost £10,000 to construct. The department store contained a furnishing department, drapery, boot and shoe department, butchers, grocery and flour room. On the floors above were offices, board room, ball room and assembly halls.

CO-OPERATION AT PENDLETON The foundation stone of the now central premises, which the Pendleton Co-operative Industrial Society are erecting the corner of Ford-lane and Cobden street, Pendleton, was laid Saturday afternoon by Mr. W. Swindells, president of the society. The buildings, which are of an extensive description, are being erected from designs by Mr. F. Smith, architect, of Manchester, at a cost, including the land, of £10,000, the contractors being Messrs. Robert Neill and Sons….. The new warehouse and bakery, situated in Cheetham-street, were afterwards opened by Mr. Wm. Booth. These premises are also very commodious, and have been erected at cost, including the land, of £121,500 (?), from designs by Mr. Smith as architect, and Messrs. Neill and Sons are the builders. CO-OPERATION IN PENDLETON: REMARKABLE PROGRESS. On Saturday afternoon a handsome pile of buildings in Broughton-road, Pendleton, erected by, intended for the use of, the Pendleton Cooperative Industrial Society, was formally opened in the presence of large number of spectators. The buildings, cover area of 740 square yards, and occupy an excellent site at the junction of Ford-lane, and Sovereign Street, are well fitted and furnished, and provide excellent accommodation for the various departments of trade carried on by the society. The premises have been erected by Messrs. Neill and Sons, Strangeways, from designs prepared by Mr. Smith, architect, Brown-street, Manchester, and the cost will about £10,000. The buildings cover an area of 740 square yards, and stand at the junction of Ford Jane, Cobden-street, and Sovereign-street, with frontages to each of these streets.
