MANCHESTER’S NEW GARAGE - From inquires in Manchester yesterday it appears that the construction of the huge steel-framed “super garage” in Deansgate has already begun. It is expected to be completed in about three months. The garage is being built privately by Mr James W Haworth, of 232 Deansgate, the Manchester representative of the Fiat Motor Company, who hopes, by the provision of a general service depot of a size not hitherto contemplated in Manchester to cope in some measure with the unsatisfactory garaging conditions in Manchester. The new building is being erected on a site on the west side of Deansgate stretching from Jackson’s Row to Bootle Street, from plans prepared by Messrs Foden Hemm and Williams of Manchester and Liverpool. Mr Foden informed a Manchester Guardian representative yesterday that the new garage, the first of its kind to be built in Manchester, will be three storeys high with a total area of 2,500 square yards, and will accommodate more than 250 cars at a time. He explained that it was intended to use the ground floor as a public garage and the first floor as a repairs department; the two upper floors will be divided into small cubicles for the garaging of private cars, which will be conveyed there by lift from the ground floor. The garage will be open night and day, and it is intended that it shall have a staff of skilled mechanics. An interesting feature will be the inclusion of a canteen and rest-room in the building, fitted up with billiard tables and telephones for the convenience of chauffeurs who are compelled to wait about with their cars for any length of time. The total cost of the scheme, it is estimated, will be,20,000. Messrs Lambourne and Company Limited of Openshaw are engaged in the construction of the steel framework, and the actual building is being undertaken by Messrs Byrom Limited of Bury, who commenced the preliminary work of excavation about a fortnight ago. The date of completion, according to the contract, is 9 April, but the strike has already somewhat delayed the work.
