NEW ROYALTY RESTAURANT, PRINCESS STREET, MANCHESTER - THE site of this restaurant is in Princess-street, directly opposite the Manchester Town Hall; a portion of the site has been acquired by the Manchester Corporation for street improvements. The basement floor contains a wine and beer store and public smoke room. The luncheon-room is provided on the ground floor, and the general dining-room on the first floor. The second floor contains the kitchen, meat store, etc., and on the top floor is situated a steam bakery and general stores. The smoke, luncheon, and dining rooms are finished with handsome polishing walnut panelled framing, and the kitchen, bakery, and stores, etc., are finished throughout in tiles. A vertical steam boiler on the second floor supplies two calorifiers in basement, one of which furnishes the hot-water supply to sinks and lavatories, and the other the hot water to heating apparatus and radiators. The steam boiler also supplies the steam to the steam cooking apparatus, plate washing machine, etc., in kitchen, and to the various hot counters in other parts of the building. The two-decker steam ovens in bakery are by Collins, of Bristol. The elevations are treated throughout in a simple decorative manner with Burmantofts semi-glazed buff terracotta and Accrington red bricks. The work has been carried out from the designs and under the supervision of the architects, Messrs. Sykes and Evans, of Chapel-walk, Manchester. The general contractors were Messrs. W. A. Peters and Sons, of Rochdale. [Building News 22 December 1905 page 865]
