The directors of the Barton-upon-Irwell Liberal Club Building Company Limited selected this design in a limited competition. The new building is to be erected on a site at the corner of Wellington-road and Albert-street. The plans will explain the arrangement. In the basement will be a gymnasium, with lavatories and conveniences. The estimated cost is £2,600. [British Architect 10 August 1877 Page 72]

ECCLES LIBERAL CLUB -On Monday afternoon the foundation stone of a new Liberal Club for the Barton-on-Irwell district was laid by Mr John Pearson, on a site at the corner of Albert Street and Wellington Road, Eccles. When completed, the building will contain a gymnasium, billiard, reading, and smoke rooms, a library, and an assembly room or lecture hall, capable of holdings, 250 people, as well as various committee rooms and offices. The building, of which Messrs. Winder and Metcalf are the architects, is estimated to cost about £3,000, and will be completed in about six months. [Manchester Times 27 April 1878 page 6]
