NEW SCHOOLS, EDGESIDE, HOLME, NEWCHURCH - These new National schools were opened by the Bishop of Manchester on Saturday. The building is Gothic in style, the outward appearance being somewhat sacrificed to internal arrangement and school has cost £1,400, exclusive of site. There is accommodation for 260 scholars. The schools are built of stone. There is a general school, 59 feet by 19 feet, and an infant school. 30 feet by 18 feet. There are two class-rooms, 10 feet by 12 feet, two large lobbies for stores, hats, etc, and two rooms below the infants' school and lobby, for boilers, tea, and stores. The whole is efficiently ventilated. Two playgrounds are attached. The whole of the work has been carried out under the personal superintendence of the architect, Mr. Henry Percival, of Newchurch. The contractors for the various works are as follows: For wood, slate, plaster, iron, etc, Mr James Roberts, of Rawtenstall; for stone and brick labour, Messrs G. Parkinson and Son of Newchurch; hot water apparatus, William Henson and Co., Blenheim Works, Pendleton. [The Architect 17 May 1873 page 269]
