On Thursday evening the Bishop of Chester laid the cornerstone of a building at Mottram, which on its completion will be used as national schools. The building, of which Mr Eaton of Ashton-under-Lyne is the architect, will be erected in the Gothic style, at a cost of about £800, and will accommodate 250 children. The site has been purchased by the Rector, the Rev W H Jones, who has presented it to the trustees of the school. [Manchester Guardian Saturday 15 July 1871 Page 9]
