Moss Street Swimming Baths and Wash Houses, Moss Street, Halliwell, Bolton

Built at a cost of £50,000, Moss Street Public Baths and Wash Houses opened in 1924 on a roughly triangular sit e bounded by Moss Street, Greenhalgh Street and Lune Street. The building contained separate swimming pools each 75 feet by 25 feet and slipper baths for men and women. a public wash house and a laundry to serve the baths. Although the charge for using a wash stall. containing a wash boiler and rinsing tub. was 3d per hour, many poor families could not afford these charges. The wash house equipment was updated in the 1950s and 1960s. But the public wash house closed in 1970 and the swimming baths, then known as Halliwell Baths, closed in 1988.

Some sources suggest that the Borough Engineer was responsible for the design.
